Nikolaus (Nick) Tullius was born in the Banat-Swabian village of Alexanderhausen/Şandra and lived there during and after the Second World War. His US-born mother never returns from forced labour in the USSR, while his father ends up in Canada. With the support of a grandmother, he completes high school and obtains his engineering degree from the Technical University “Politehnica Timisoara” in Romania.
